Arlington Football Rivalry Heats Up Oct. 31

By Niti P., Teen Portal Staff Writer

The game that will determine the best high school football team in Arlington happens to be on Halloween night when the Yorktown Patriots (5-4, 3-2) will butt heads with the Washington-Lee Generals (5-4, 3-2). The game will cap off one of the most heated seasons of Arlington high school football ever, with many close matches among the three county rivals.

The Patriots seem to be the favorite on Friday night, as they have beaten the Generals for the last 27 consecutive years. However, the Generals were close last year as Yorktown won the game 13-7. Moreover, the Generals have improved and could very well cause one of the biggest upsets in Arlington high school football.

Although Wakefield’s (3-6, 2-3) record isn’t quite on par with Yorktown’s and W&L’s, the Warriors have also intensified the Arlington rivalry by giving both teams a run for their money.

The Washington-Lee Homecoming game against the Warriors was close. The Wakefield offense had a great first half and the Warriors were leading the Generals 20-3 at halftime. However, during the second half the Generals’ offense stepped up, and with the help of their defense, shut down the Warriors. The Generals had a remarkable comeback, winning their Homecoming game in a thrilling second half with a score of 21-20. Earlier in the season, Wakefield nearly won a match with Yorktown, which ended up with a lucky 21-14 win over the Warriors despite some close calls on Oct. 17.

In all, the Arlington rivalries seem to be a good thing as they get students pumped up for the games and give players something to look forward to. And when the last match is settled, at least some team in Arlington will earn bragging rights for the year.
