I recently learned about an opportunity for Arlington high school students to contribute to an international group of teens trying to impact two of the Earth’s most serious issues – the environment and global poverty. Our Task, an international network that is developing a “Youth Earth Plan,” is holding a conference from 10 am to 2 pm this Saturday, Nov. 15, at Central Library (1015 N. Quincy St.). It is one of the few events I’ve heard about that actually asks teens for input on modern day problems.
I know it’s on a Saturday, but this conference seems to be an excellent way to learn more about the issues that could truly affect our future. During the conference, you will be able to state your opinions, hear others opinions on different matters and hear about solutions already proposed by teens around the world.
You can also volunteer to become a discussion leader for the conference. (To volunteer, you must go to the Web site and register to attend the conference. Toward the bottom of the page there is a section to select if you would like to volunteer as a discussion leader.)
The Our Task network consists of young adults between the ages 15-25 who are spread across the globe. With the help of adult mentors, this network focuses on the question “How are we humans to meet the legitimate needs of our growing human community without destroying the ability of Earth to support the whole community of life?”
I’m looking forward to seeing how this conference will run. I think it will be pretty interesting to find out how other teens feel about these issues, so I can get a different perspective. In all, attending this conference seems to be a great way to get involved in helping our Planet Earth.
For more information and to register, go to the Our Task Web site. If you can’t make it to the conference, you can still contribute to Our Task, by becoming a member or by helping out in other ways.
