. If you would prefer not to fight the crowds, here are some alternative ideas for how to participate in this historical event:

• Celebrate with MTV, which will broadcast the “Be the Change Inaugural Ball” on all its channels and Web sites. The details of the event have yet to be released but some big names are expected.

• Go to Old Town, Alexandria, where the swearing-in ceremony and parade will be broadcast in the Market Square at the City Hall building, 301 King St., from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• Take an oath along with the new President. People of all ages and from all walks of life, LED BY YOUTH, will gather in Arlington on Jan. 19 to share their own personal versions of the Oath of Office -- what they themselves pledge to do for the social good during the next four years -- and will be videotaped committing to them (as President-Elect Obama will do). Videos will be uploaded to the Youth Venture Web site, with text of each person's oath as part of a national campaign. To participate, sign up here.

• Join in a day of service on Jan. 19. To honor Dr. King’s legacy, the President-elect and Vice President-elect and their families, joined by Americans in communities all across the country, will participate in activities dedicated to serving others in communities across the Washington, D.C. area.
