Whether you like to skate board or not, you might enjoy getting pulled into the steep plunges and unusual balance points of this street sport in a whole new way through “Breaking Ground," a skating-dance performance at Powhatan Springs Skate Park on Saturday.
In the free performance, which starts at 6 pm, dancers from Arlington-based Jane Franklin Dance "interact with video and react with dynamic movement to define the skate boarding experience," and to explore the skate park with those who skate there.
Originally performed at 1250 9th St NW, an indoor skate park near the Convention Center in D.C., “Breaking Ground” combines round wall skate boarders with company dancers. Check out the video, created for the DC Shorts Film Festival, below to get a taste of the performance.
Jane Franklin Dance has several performances scheduled in Arlington, including another free show in Clarendon Market Commons on Oct. 26 at 3 pm and “The Music Made Me Do It,” a show that includes excerpts from “Breaking Ground,” at Thomas Jefferson Community Center on Nov. 6 and 8. Check back on the Teen Calendar for more information as the dates of these events approach. Or, for more information, visit the Jane Franklin Dance Web site.
