The Wedge: A New Way to Check out Some Local Teen Bands

By Helen, Teen Portal Staff Writer

I went to The Wedge on Saturday. The Wedge is this little concert series for local bands to perform at the Church at Clarendon. The bands that performed were Sing Me Insomnia (from Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria) and The Suedes (from HB Woodlawn).

Sing Me Insomnia played first, and those guys had a ton of energy. Here's a YouTube video somebody posted from their show:

The band members included Marshall C., who plays the keys and sings; his brother, Jared C., who plays the guitar and sings; Wes B., who plays the bass; and John S., who is the drummer. Marshall and Jared were dancing and jumping all around on stage, and the audience seemed to be enjoying themselves, too. I’m not usually a big fan of pop music, but their mix of pop/rock went well. The instrumental was pretty darn good. However, the technical standpoint wasn’t too great; the speakers for the instruments were too loud, so it was difficult to hear Marshall and Jared’s crooning. Jared and Marshall were very happy for the support of their guests, and showed their love with tons of hugs for everybody, including me.

I couldn’t stay for the whole show of The Suedes, but their music was more sophisticated in the sense that they had a melody that could easily be recognized. The band consists of: Jack C. who plays the guitar and sings; Emerson S., who plays the keys, bass, and sings; Michael V. who plays the drums; Nick D. who plays the guitar and sings; and John P., who plays the guitar and bass.

Overall, I enjoyed my experience at The Wedge, and plan to attend future shows. If you want to listen to some music from Sing Me Insomnia, give them a listen at: www.myspace.com/singmeinsomnia. You also can listen to The Suedes at: www.myspace.com/thesuedes123. The Wedge’s next show will feature another Alexandria band called Cities by the Sea on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. Check the Teen Calendar for details.
