Make a Difference: Volunteer!

by Niti P.

If you happen to have some free time and don’t really know what to do, volunteering is an excellent way to spend your afternoon. While you volunteer, you get the chance to meet all sorts of new people, and if you’re not to into that, you can always hang with your friends while you volunteer. Living in Northern Virginia, we have many opportunities to volunteer as we are neighbors to the nation’s capital.

Here are a few ideas:

Newseum: While searching around for places on Dosomething.com, I found a great place to volunteer. The Newseum in Washington D.C. is looking for volunteers! They are looking for people 16 and older to provide assistance. Some positions they are looking to fill are: greeting visitors, and helping out during programs and events. It looks like a great place to have fun, give back, and it would look terrific on a college application. More than that, the Newseum which is a brand new attraction in D.C., and you could learn more about the history and the history newspapers which can be fascinating. If this specific place doesn’t interest you, the site shows provides you with many different options.

Local hospitals: You could also volunteer at a local hospital for instance Virginia Hospital Center, which is located in Arlington. Another hospital you could volunteer is the Georgetown University Hospital. Volunteering at the hospital is a great opportunity for those who are thinking about perusing a medical career as you will be in relatively the same working environment. A friend of mine, who is junior at W-L, volunteered at Georgetown last year and said it was an excellent way to give back and spend her afternoons. After completing one session there, she realized that she was interested in pursuing a medical career, and she is looking forward to going back to Georgetown this year and volunteering, as it as a great experience for her last year.

So think about, give it glance, try it out, and see what you can do to help. These are just a few suggestions; there are many different places in which you could volunteer. Some other sites you should consider are America’s Promise, iEARN, Network for Good, ServeNet, TakingITglobal, Voices of youth, and YouthNOISE.
